Korea in the World Cup

The 2002 World Cup will mark the sixth time South Korea have appeared at the finals. Having debuted in Switzerland in 1954, in a tournament most Koreans would prefer forgotten, the national side qualified for Mexico '86, Italy '90, USA '94 and France '98. Despite a number of credible displays, however, Korea have yet to win a match at the finals.

The next step?

At the end of 2000, Korea broke with tradition and appointed the first foreigner as head coach of the national team. Ex-Netherlands and Real Madrid boss Guus Hiddink will be in charge up to the end of the 2002 World Cup, and to most Koreans, his brief is to get their team to at least the last 16.
